Hawwwwwt. April 18, 2006

Filed under: Uncategorized — Chris @ 8:09 pm

That’s all I got — it’s been so increcibly hot here the last two days! Today it was 100F, yesterday was 101. In April.

Let’s hope that cool front comes through for us tonight (it’s supposed to be in the 70s tomorrow, which is normal)

Thursday NanC and I went to see my mom for her birthday, and on the freeway we saw this in the back of a pickup truck:

Bunny!

Also in the truck were a goat and a duck (in separate enclosures, not together). Crazy!

This past weekend was the first one in a while that I didn’t plant anything new; we spent Sunday at my mother-in-law’s, and it was too darn hot to do anything but water all the “crops”.

Here’s my herb garden so far . . .

basil, oregano, parsley, cilantro, lavender, thai basil, and rosemary!

I also have my first tomato . . . it’s the size of a marble, but it’s an actual tomato! Woo!

Camera happy! April 3, 2006

In an effort to be a better blogger, I’ve gotten a bit enthusiastic with the camera the past few days in between bouts of digging in the dirt and knitting. So, if you have a dial-up connection, my apologies. You may want to go make a cup of tea or a complicated cocktail and come back in a bit.

Hub and I had a busy weekend outdoors . . . we bought yet another load of dirt (who knew that I’d be spending so much money this spring on dirt!) and some more garden tools.

When we got back from Elliot’s (my favorite hardware store!), I proceeded to turn this

into this.

(The next day I transformed it even further into this)

flowery goodness, mmmmmm

While I was felling the mighty and misplaced boxwood shrubs, Hub spent a bunch of time stalking the agressive and tenacious henbit in the yard (it’s threatening to take over the place). It looked a bit like rain, so we went to the movies (V for Vendetta — much better than I thought it would be!). I am not sure it ever did rain, but the break was good.

Sunday found me back in the yard, planting the impatiens (when I was little I always thought they were named “impatients”, which describes me to a tee) and some other stuff, like oregano and these:

Merced tomatoes — recommended by a friend of mine, and planted rather haphazardly in the sunniest spot I could think of. I hope they live long and prosper.

At this point, it was getting hot (high of 92F here yesterday!), so I took a knitting break with NanC . . .

I worked on the second Samus sleeve

And finally turned the heel on a fun tweedy stripey sock.

Trekking XXL color 100, baybee!

I also pulled the other socks I finished out of the bottom of my knitting bag and took some pictures. These socks were not much fun at all for me to knit, though I love the result. I did them toe-up, with short-row toes, both at the same time. It’s the “both at the same time” I had a problem with . . . I just don’t really like doing socks this way. For some reason instead of seeming to go faster, it seems to take me longer to finish, and I find the constant juggling of yarn balls to be fussy. And we don’t like fussy.

Anyway, here they are . . . lounging in the Photinia tree

And in the only patch of my backyard that has grass that is consistent in color and texture . . . this pic makes me think of easter eggs!

OH! And I almost forgot! Remember that nice fat rosebud picture I posted the other day? Well, here’s what it looks like today:

And last but not least (you’ve finished that cocktail by now, haven’t you?), my friend/coworker Ellen just came back from Taiwan and brought me a little prezzie:
